The gadget wars – good for readers

Cover of "Kindle Wireless Reading Device,... One of the main concerns with this e-book business was that it would take away from the traditional big-press publishers’ bottom line and maybe it does but from educators to casual readers, people are pretty excited that so much more material is available thanks to small press and independent publishers who are leveraging technology to tell their stories.  With that we also find our choice of platforms is now just as varied as book chains were 10 years ago.

Readers, authors win - DBT shares Indie marketing tip

Our friends over ad Digital Book Today run a great site that gives indie authors a fantastic platform to showcase their work.  Readers also get a hand with reviews, but particularly with all of the free book promotions.

Now lots of people probably wonder why an author would spend so much time writing and editing and then simply give their work away.  Well, as the DBT's post today explains, there is a method to the madness where the reader and the author win. Hit the icon below to check out the post and make sure to browse the homepage when you're done.

Season of change

I've been kicking this blogging thing around for a while, researching and comparing and have come to the conclusion that it's nearly time for a change.  When I looked at the pros and cons between Blogger and WordPress I found the latter holds much more functionality, tailored to what I would like to do going forward.  The former has made it very difficult for people to follow unless they are tied into Google and that bothers me on principle alone.

To that end I've started to build my next landing spot for all things books called The Motley Chronicles.  Ideally  we'll add some guest posts as we go but the focus will be very much literary.  I hope you'll swing by, give it a browse and let me know what you think:  http://motleychronicles.com

We'll keep Top Shelf going for a while as this transition continues but I do expect we'll finish things up in the next month.  Thanks for always taking the time to read the blog and I sincerely hope to see you at The Motley Chronicles.

To review or not review

I’m still a rookie book reviewer in so many ways but one of the lessons I’ve learned is to be selective because you owe it to yourself and the author.
